#StrengthsDay: An Introduction

by Sam Radford on May 26, 2009

Starting tomorrow (27th May) I’m launching a new weekly feature. Every Wednesday is going to be what I’m calling “Strengths Day”. This will be focussed specifically around the Gallup StrengthsFinder tool.

Each Wednesday I will take one persons top five signature themes and go through them with the person on the Awaken site. I’ll share tips and insights to help each person develop their themes and help identify steps to start turning the talents that the StrengthsFinder tool identifies into true strengths.

If you’re not the person specifically being focussed on it’ll still be extremely helpful for you. When other people have one of more of your themes, you can see how they operate in someone different from yourself. Also, many of the tips will be things you can take and apply to the themes that you do have.

To have your five signature themes discussed is really simple. Share what your top five are in the order that you got them in the comments below. I will then randomly pick one person and they’ll be the focus tomorrow.

If you do submit your five themes, to make this most fulfilling for you and for others, taking some time to answer some questions I’ll include is going to be key. So if you’re picked but you know you won’t have any time to interact with the post, please let me know ASAP so that we can reschedule you.

All that said, fire away! Add your five themes to the comments now.

Developer – People who are especially talented in the Developer theme recognize and cultivate the potential in others. They spot the signs of each small improvement and derive satisfaction from these improvements.

Adaptability – People who are especially talented in the Adaptability theme prefer to “go with the flow.” They tend to be “now” people who take things as they come and discover the future one day at a time.

Connectedness – People who are especially talented in the Connectedness theme have faith in the links between all things. They believe there are few coincidences and that almost every event has a reason.

Positivity – People who are especially talented in the Positivity theme have an enthusiasm that is contagious. They are upbeat and can get others excited about what they are going to do.

Belief – People who are especially talented in the Belief theme have certain core values that are unchanging. Out of these values emerges a defined purpose for their life.

Added the description for those who might wonder what the words mean :-)

4 Jennie Kohl Austin May 26, 2009 at 5:01 pm

Oh, I LOVE StrengthsFinder!

Ideation
People strong in the Ideation theme are fascinated by ideas. They are able to find connections between seemingly disparate phenomena.

Activator
People strong in the Activator theme can make things happen by turning thoughts into action. They are often impatient.

Strategic
People strong in the Strategic theme create alternative ways to proceed. Faced with any given scenario, they can quickly spot the relevant patterns and issues.

Input
People strong in the Input theme have a craving to know more. Often they like to collect and archive all kinds of information.

Learner
People strong in the Learner theme have a great desire to learn and want to continuously improve. In particular, the process of learning, rather than the outcome, excites them.

Developer, Responsibility, Adaptability, Belief, and Connectedness

I took this about 4 years ago and these are my results. How often do these strengths change? I sure feel like a different person than the one I was four years ago. So, does that mean that my strengths have changed, or that I learned to use them in different ways?

I am wondering what the best career change would be for me…

43 Stephanie Eastman January 27, 2010 at 5:27 am

Hi Stella, you seem to have the same strengths as me but belief and harmony being different. May I ask what you do for a living?

44 Stella Kairo January 28, 2010 at 11:28 pm

Hi Stephanie,

When I saw your strengths, I too thought of sending you an email to see what you do, but it looks like you have beat me to it. I have never come across anyone with similar strengths to me, so this is awesome. I am a Systems Business Analyst, but I feel I am not using my strengths. What about you? What do you do right now and what are you thinking of changing into (if you are that is)?

45 Stephanie Eastman January 29, 2010 at 5:12 am

Hi Stella,

Thank you very much for the reply! Yes, that’s pretty neat! I am trying to find my niche…been for a while. I have been an assistant for quite a few years now, since 1996/1997. I am having a hard time thinking of where I fit in inside the corporate world. I am very Spiritual and really enjoy those kind of deep conversations, counseling, etc. I feel very passionate when I talk to people either 1:1 counseling or sharing wisdom I feel God has given me. I am going to school part time (at your own pace and wish I had a lot more of the “discipline” strength to get that moving. I thought of perhaps creating my own website one day to have a combination of health/Spirituality issues/insight, etc. What do you think you want to do? I have a passion for the arts too. I enjoy too many things! :-) Please feel free to email me at golfer777@att.net

Look forward to hearing from you.

Take Care and God Bless,

Stephanie
